Story into a game

1.)      We went to the golf course, the sky was clear blue with tiny puffs of white scattered about.  The challenge had been set as it had many times before, me vs. my father.  For 19 years this battle had played out between us. Ever since I was little I had been trying to beat my father in golf, and it wasn’t until the past couple of years that I was good enough to contend for the title. But Today was different; the air crisp with the smell of fall, a cool breeze lazily sent leaves flying, today was the day I would win. As I felt the weight of the putter in my practiced hands, I scanned the green in front of me. The cup was about 15 feet away, slightly downhill; the slope meant the ball would roll to the left and be quick. I glanced quickly at my dad, he had already made his putt. It all came down to this moment, I addressed my ball, went through the practice strokes; my eyes never broke contact with the imaginary line I drew towards the hole. I took a deep breath, time slowed to a crawl as I rolled the ball towards the cup; I felt as though I was watching every rotation. After a lifetime, it paused on the rim of the cup, then disappeared.
2.)    The last hole was a tricky one. The fairway opened up on the left with a clean landing area, but it left a long second shot into the green. In golf this is the safer play with little danger but the other play was a long driver cutting the corner, this brought out of bounds, bunkers, and was a smaller percentage shot for success but the rewards were having an easy second shot and a better chance to score low.   The second shot depends on the route of the first; if you played it safe you had around 200 yards with a pin tucked near the right edge, guarded by a front and side bunker, again, go for the flag or go for the middle.  If the riskier play worked out you had a short chip that one could attack the pin at. If the drive went out of bounds then you have to re-hit your opening shot.   If the safe shot lands on the green you have to putt; if it doesn’t, a chip and a putt are the choices ahead. If the risky shot lands on the green you putt; if the chip is poor then you go again, then you putt.
3.)    As a game this would play out much like your standard  tiger woods golf game were you play out the holes and choose club and do a swing on the kinect platform,  but the twist you can choose certain responses say to taunt your opponent, or your own responses to events this can affect the outcome.  Also weather and conditions can play a role in the gameplay. if a perfect shot is hit the player is granted special abilities like control over the balls flight and movement.   Because the core conflict is me vs. my father in a competitive match, the end goal is to win, but there’s also the manner in which you win. Do you showboat, do you win with class; all  of this is a plays a part of the overall goal of the game.  The uncertainty in this game would be the tension and pressure on the play. This makes each shot more stressful, the risks and rewards greater.
Emergent Narrative elements:  The core conflict father vs son,  the opportunity to choose not only how to physically play the hole but also the manner in which it is played gives the players the ability to shape gameplay and the story. Giving the player the option on standard play as well as "story" control allows meaningful play to emerge from the narrative.
Peer reviews: Evan- have weather conditions affect the game
Spencer- A perfect shot generates more points, and allows the player to have some control over the  ball on the next shot as it moves.
Miranda- Because the core conflict is me vs. my father in a competitive match, the end goal is to win, but there’s also the way in which you celebrate a win.
