The whole manner in which the game is played relies on a system of feedback that constantly informs the player of the outcome of there moves. Without this system the game would not function.

Every decision in Sim's is based on the feedback loops you get from the game pertaining your character and the world they inhabit.

With Starcraft the fog of war plays into the information theory, you see when the screen is clear and there is less information, the player is calm but when information becomes present like red dots swarming in then it changes to an excited environment.

Much like Starcraft in paintball you cant always see your opponent, this calm state when there is little information, until the enemy has been found and information presents itself the environment changes.
